Tribe.net adds a game section

by greg on October 27, 2005

According to an e-mail I received from a community marketing staffer, social networking site Tribe.net is now offering a section on downloadable games powered by online game provider Boonty. I don’t immediately see the relationship of this to the rest of Tribe, which makes me wonder whether Tribe is hurting for revenue and casting about a bit. (Or maybe they’re doing wonderfully, and are just after more revenue. Or maybe the games can be made to fit into Tribe in a way I’m not familiar with – perhaps they have future plans. Whatever the motivation, the offering feels incongruous.)

The pessimist in me thinks Boonty and other easy-to-add sources of content-based revenue will get plenty of distribution when the entrepreneurship boomlet begins to contract, and services with traffic but poor monetization cast about for ways to keep themselves going. Any business that offers a unique source of monetizable content to other businesses is going to then do pretty well for itself.
