Privacy kafuffle approaching

by greg on May 6, 2008

Go read Chris Messina on location-aware services. He makes an obvious point but it’s nicely written – location’s about to tip, and in a year or so location-aware services will be ubiquitous. Now combine that with state government interference in the online ad industry (with the help of Microsoft, who can sell more ads if they cripple the technology of others.) You don’t need to be Nostradamus to predict mobile geolocation will be the next big privacy fuss.

Too bad – this is some extremely neat technology.

UPDATE: An article about the impending privacy fuss came out today. Hat tip to Natural Search Blog. This sort of move is guaranteed to backfire – if the industry is forced to go opt-in then opt-in will become mandatory to even access the basic service. Too much money at stake.
